I came late to domesticity: through my 20s in London I kept only coffee in the fridge. However, when my son was born I knuckled down to handle all aspects of the smooth-running of a family home.

I have also taken my domestic skills into the professional arena: my job at Argo Trust (see Free: –  Care support) involved cooking, laundry and cleaning to a high standard for a busy group household.

Over recent years I assisted my mother with radical downsizing as she progressed from a three-bedroom villa to a one-bedroom flat, then a single room

Move over Sara-Lee:For the best apple pies you will ever find you need look no further than Sarah Read. Sarah is a woman of many house-keeping talents, and the apple pie is up there in my personal top 5 . A close second comes the lemon cake (with lemon yoghurt and berry sauce – yum!).
While work around the house is not ‘woman’s work’, Sarah excels at it. She makes a house into a home.
